On the Bird Feeder / In the Sky

Blackbird (lord of the back garden, although Mrs Blackbird forages under the Feeder)
Blue Tit (lots of)
Buzzard (or is it a Red Kite?)
Chaffinch (a regular visitor to the Feeder)
Collared Dove (nesting in the Yew Tree)
Dunnock (lurks around the Feeder)
Goldfinch (a regular visitor since we put the niger seeds out, although I think they prefer the sunflower hearts!)
Great Spotted Woodpecker (now a regular visitor, really likes the peanuts)
Great Tit (also lots of)
Greenfinch (fair number)
House Sparrow (the sparrow 'mafia')
Jay (recently observed on the bird feeder)
Nuthatch (a new arrival on the scene)
Pied Wagtail (seems to like hopping about on the roof)
Raven (tries to eat from the peanut feeder but doesn't have the beak for it!)
Red Kite (often seen soaring above)
Robin ('fat' and 'thin')
Song Thrush (lots of snail shells to be found so must be doing ok)
Starling (just the one, really likes the fat balls!)
Swallow (a regular swoop of)
Wren (hard to spot)

This Week I am Mostly Reading ...

January-February 2026 – Back to the world of St Mary's, albeit from another perspective with Jodi Taylor's The Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal - as ever great stuff, very amusing, and nice to find out more about two of her more intriguing characters.

January 2026 – Something a bit different with a treatise on the possible origins of a 'real' Robin Hood, Sean McGlynn's Robin Hood: A True Legend - interesting read, and learnt some stuff I didn't know too.

February - May 2026 - Back to Jodi Taylor, and her St Mary's spin-off 'Time Police' series Doing Time, Hard Time, Saving Time, About Time, Killing Time, Out of Time. Again, hugely enjoyable romps through time, bringing in some favourite characters from St Mary's and establishing a number of new ones. Looking forward to the next instalment.

June - August 2026 - actually not been reading a lot - mostly dipping into another historical analysis Cunning Folk: Life in the Era of Practical Magic by Tabitha Stanmore, looking at how 'magic' was used in the pre-scientific era to solve problems, find lost items, find love etc. Interesting stuff!
