Timber!

We had our own version of a 'superstorm' today - the winds were gusting up to 56mph at one point, and unfortunately some of our garden flora couldn't take it.

The ornamental pear tree is probably the major casualty - we now have a stump, and a lump on the other side of the garden:

 

Ah well, it'll all be fodder for the wood burner in due course, and luckily the 'big' trees made it through in more or less one piece.

Putting the Garden to Bed

Finally had a couple of sunny days, and a chance to get out into the garden to complete the last few tasks before winter finally arrives.  The (still rather damp) grass got its final cut . . .

. . . and the ornamental pear tree its annual haircut!



Also got the main veg plot tidied up (just leaving the sprouts in situ, as they may yet come to something). Once it was weeded and dug over, spread it with a layer of (relatively) fresh seaweed that we harvested the other week - which will hopefully feed the soil for some bumper crops next year!

That just leaves us then with the leek crop in the small veg plot - they went in a bit late, but seem to be coming along nicely enough   . . .

Time for a Haircut!

It seems that Saturday was the Last Day of Summer (at least that's the way it feels after the last couple of day's weather) and it was time to give the Ornamental Pear a bit of a trim.
